Alfred Wallis

Alfred Wallis (1855-1942)

A fisherman since childhood Alfred Wallis moved to St Ives in 1890 where he set up as a marine scrap merchant. he retired in 1912 and only started to paint after he death of his wife in 1922. Wallis was discovered in 1928 by Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood, his subjects included ships at sea, shipwrecks and landscapes. wallis regarded his paintings as a impressions of his experiences. Unaware of linear perspective Wallis arranged objects in terms of relative importance, this determined their size. he used very few colours he is associated with dark browns, greys whites and 'Cornish' greens.
Despite the attention from Wood and Nicholson Alfred Wallis sold very few paintings in his lifetime and continued to live in poverty and died in Madron Workhouse, Penzance.

Ben Nicholson

Ben Nicholson (1894-1982)

Ben Nicholson was best known as a pioneer of abstract art in Britain. Nicholson's earliest paintings were still lifes influenced by those of his father. In the 1920's he began figurative painting and abstract work influenced by Post Impressionism and Cubism. Nicholson later began to work in relief, he carved and painted reliefs in a bold geometric style which placed him as a leader of the Constructivist movement in London in the 1930's.
He first visited St Ives in 1928 where along with fellow artist Christopher Wood, Nicholson discovered Alfred Wallis. Nicholson joined the St Ives Group in 1943 and along with sculptor Naum Gabo he taught and inspired other young artists which included Peter Lanyon.

Patrick Heron

Patrick Heron (1920-1999)

Patrick Heron an English painter, writer and designer based in St Ives, Cornwall. Heron's influences were wide and varied, during his teenage years he designed for his fathers company Cresta Silks. 1944-5 he was an assistant at the Bernard Leach pottery. In the post war years Heron was greatly interested in and influenced by the work of French artists such as Mattise and Bonnard, this can be seen in the flat linear style of his still life works. In the 1950's Heron was closely identified with the St Ives group of painters along with Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth. Mid 1950's Heron began to paint in an abstract style with a bold use of colour, he is often regarded as one of the earliest champions of abstract expressionism in the UK and one of the foremost critics and writers on modern art.

Peter Lanyon

Peter Lanyon (1918-1964)

Peter Lanyon was a Cornish painter of lanscapes leaning heavily towards abstraction, he also made constructions, pottery and collage. Lanyon was born in St Ives the son of W H Lanyon and amateur photographer and musician. Whilst though his work Lanyon identified with the hardships of the Cornish farmers and miners, he was born into a wealthy family who had made their money through mining. He received lessons from the traditional marine painter Borlase Smart thus linking him to an earlier period of St Ives art before he joined with Naum Gabo, Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth who gave him lessons in Cubism.
Lanyon chose to make a more direct reference to the landscape than Gabo or Hepworth, visual and structural information concerning the Cornish landscape and life were combined with figurative suggestion in his final works.
Lanyon talked of exploring edges such as that between sea and cliff, wind and land and the human body and places. The tactile surface and compact forms of his earlier work began to develop into a new flowing style on an increased scale, encouraged by his knowledge of Abstract Expressionism. In 1959 Lanyon took up gliding, his last works drew inspiration from his gliding in addition he also created reliefs which influenced his oil paintings. Peter Lanyon died in 1964 following a gliding accident.
